When it comes to getting deals on dental insurance (or other health benefits), we don't tend to think of checking with the school we graduate from. However, if you donate to your alma mater, you may be able to get some sweet benefits, like discounted dental work.
As finance blog Five Cent Nickel points out, colleges frequently offer benefits packages to any graduates who donate to their old university. One of the perks of doing so is group dental insurance, which can sometimes be cheaper than your regular offerings:
My school sends me a letter every year asking for donations. The letter always accompanies a list of benefits I receive as an alumnus, one of them being group dental insurance. I asked for a quote using the group discount and found that, while it was not the cheapest, it definitely brought the rate down significantly.
Of course, whether this is the most cost-effective solution will depend on how much they want in donations to get your perks, but it's a less-than-obvious alternative that's worth checking into. Check out Five Cent Nickel's post for more ways to save money on dental insurance.
