A Simple Rule of Thumb for Applying Sunscreen to Kids or Yourself

A Simple Rule of Thumb for Applying Sunscreen to Kids or Yourself

Many of us are outdoors more in the summer, which means we're more conscious about putting on sunscreen. Do you really have to put it on, though, every time you walk out the door? One nurse offers this simple guideline.

As Hint Mama reports:

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes prior to exposure if your little one is going to be outside for more than 30 minutes between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and reapply the lotion every two hours.

After that, a little sun exposure should be fine—and can even get you a good dose of vitamin D. A hat or staying in the shade can also protect you during those sunscreen-less times.

We're all probably not applying enough sunscreen when we do decide to put it on, and not everyone knows how to apply sunscreen properly. But nurse Judy's advice could help put our minds at ease about being a little less vigilant about applying sunscreen all the time.
