Why You Need to Hear the Same Financial Advice Over and Over

Why You Need to Hear the Same Financial Advice Over and Over

When you really break it down, a lot of financial advice turns out to be the same. Spend less, save more, and reduce expenses. So, how do so many articles continue to get written on the topic? Simple: we need to hear it repeatedly.

As personal finance blog See Debt Run explains, you could probably learn everything you need to know about money from a weekend class (or a 3x5 index card). The value in reading and hearing more about finance isn't always in learning the new information—though that can happen, too—but in the repetition that drills it into your head:

I feel the need for repetition in the lessons of personal finance in the same way I feel the need to hear my partner say, "I love you". While I already know it to be true, I need to hear it regularly. Similarly, I need to hear those familiar money lessons often. Even though I know them, it takes that reminder, that moment of checking in, to make sure I'm actually implementing them.

The flip side, of course, is that the sooner we think that we know it all, the more likely we are to stop practicing what we know. Personal finance is an every day goal. Even if a particular bit of advice isn't new information, it's worth hearing again.
