OS X (10.9+): If you're looking to customize your desktop in OS X, usually you'd turn to an app like GeekTool. Now there's an alternative—Übersicht, a new app that lets you build custom widgets to embed on your desktop and display whatever you like—weather, to-dos, appointments, and more.
Übersicht is brand new, and while there aren't a ton of included widgets for it just yet, they're really easy to write if you're familiar with CoffeeScript or JavaScript. If you can write it, you can put it on your desktop. The app works great out of the box, and if all you want is a quick status monitor, the developer already has widgets that show you the top processes on your Mac using CPU or RAM, and a good-looking weather widget that'll look nice behind your other apps. Beyond that however, creating new ones is up to you, but unlike GeekTool, it's a bit easier to do.
Übersicht is free and available now—you can hit the link below to see more of it, or head over to the project's GitHub page. If you do build great widgets, make sure to submit them to the developer and he'll include them in the list on the website. Similarly, if you build any good-looking Übersicht-based desktops, make sure to submit them to our desktop showcase!
