When you're working hard at something—like a diet or a budget—it's okay to reward yourself for hitting a milestone. The ideal reward, however, is one that doesn't set back your progress.
It's tempting to celebrate the loss of a few pounds with a slice (or three) of cheesecake. Maybe you want to buy yourself that little something you've wanted for ages because you've finally paid off that credit card? We've mentioned before that it's okay to reward yourself a little bit, but if you're the type of person prone to overindulging, you might be better off with a different reward. Trent at The Simple Dollar recommends asking these simple questions:
- Am I going to undo progress on my current goal if I do this?
- Am I going to undo progress on a different goal if I do this?
- Am I going to regret celebrating this way later on?
If you can answer yes to any of these, it might be problematic later on. (Trent gives the example of when he got out of debt—instead of buying something expensive, he and his wife celebrated with a romantic home cooked dinner).
Finding a balance between hard work and rewarding yourself can be difficult, but it could save you a great deal of time and regret in the long run. Hit the link to read more.
