Rental companies will offer you "free" upgrades to bigger, fancier cars, but it can end up costing you more in fuel costs.
It's tempting to want the best options when you travel, but it's not very cost effective. Trent from The Simple Dollar almost fell for the offer of a "free" upgrade:
I started clicking through the online forms to sign up for the car rental when I realized I was making a mistake. I thought about fuel. So I looked up the fuel mileage of the larger sedans and the options averaged somewhere around 20 miles per gallon. On the other hand, the economy cars were clocking in between 30 and 35 miles per gallon… In truth, the "free" upgrade would cost me $82.50.
Remember, you're just renting the vehicle, and it's only purpose is to get you from one place to another. Save that cash for once in a lifetime experiences or more trips to places you've never been.
