There are a lot of choices we don't get to make. We can't pick our circumstances, we can't choose our luck, and sometimes we have to do things we would never have chosen to do. As legendary puppeteer Jim Henson points out, though, sometimes the things we hate most are the things we do to ourselves.
It's not always the easiest pill to swallow, and certainly there are complicated situations that don't make the choices very easy. At the end of the day, though, most of us have the choice to pursue—even if only in some small way—the things that make us happy or lead to a better, more productive life. You can't decide one day to suddenly be a millionaire. You can decide to eat out a little less and invest in your savings a little more. You can't control every aspect of your life, but you can choose your response to it.
Zen Pencils has the full quote in a delightful comic form at the source link below, conveying the subtle, causal link between our own choices and where we end up in life. You're not in complete control of the world, but you can control your own life if you choose to.
