The word "so" is a common way to start a response or discussion. The problem is, in many instances, you are undermining your message.
Fast Company encourages us to get rid of the word "so," because it's a filler word—even if it isn't one of the more well-known ones.
Fast Company explains:
"Just as the "so" setup announces that this portion of the conversation will be very deliberate, it also demonstrates that you're not as comfortable with your story as you think you are.
Rather than just plainly answering their question, you're relying on the crutch of a practiced blurb. Usually, whatever follows "so" is a carefully crafted sentence, evolved over many iterations and audience reactions."
Even if you don't agree with the evil aspects of "so", it's unnecessary. Speak directly to your audience and simply take a quick pause instead of using the word "so."
