Commit An Hour a Day to Improving Your Skills at Work

Commit An Hour a Day to Improving Your Skills at Work

As Trent, over at The Simple Dollar, puts it, "an hour a day keeps the pink slip away." Spending an hour every day learning something new related to your job or career gives you an easy-to-schedule way to make yourself essential at work and improve your skills so you can grow.

Whether you like your job and would like to keep it (or even get promoted) or you just want to find time to improve your skills and make yourself more marketable, an hour a day is all it takes to get it done. If you can dedicate an hour every day towards learning something new that's job-related, not only are you beefing up your skillset, you'll quickly find ways to make those new skills applicable to your current work. In short, you're learning something new and putting it into practice immediately, which is always a good thing if you're looking to stay gainfully employed.

Trent explained that there may be a little run-up period where you feel like you may be wasting time, since at first you'll think you're spending an hour every day on something new when you could be working on something on your actual to-do list, but over time the lessons you learned will help you work smarter, not necessarily harder. Hit the link below for the whole piece, but the short version is that an hour a day—or even a few hours a week—isn't too much to invest in your career, your skills, or just keeping your job.
