Chrome/Firefox/iOS/Outlook (Others Soon): Email encryption isn't difficult, but it hasn't caught on with everyday users. Virtru wants to change that. The service offers encryption, message tracking, and the option to recall sent messages. It also supports Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and others, for free.
There are plenty of ways to encrypt your email, from one-click browser methods to full PGP encryption, but all of them can be tricky to set up and use. Virtru is an add-on that makes encryption automatic—every message you send and opt to be secure is encrypted before it leaves your computer. Setting it up is simple as well, and doesn't require as many of the hoops as other tools do. The service also gives you a dashboard you can use to see if your messages have been forwarded to others or read by the intended recipient. You can revoke access to files or recall messages at any time.
Virtru does all of this by using TDF (Trusted Data Format) to make sure the recipient viewing your message has rights to it. If you've recalled the message or it's not the intended recipient, the encryption persists and the message cannot be read. If the recipient checks out, the message is unwrapped and presented to the viewer automatically. It's promising, and a way to get encryption and security into email without sender and recipient needing to install tools or share keys. Virtru is still under development, and supports Chrome and Firefox, iOS devices, and Microsoft Outlook on Windows right now (OS X Mail, Android, Safari, and IE are on the way and you can sign up to be notified when they're ready).
