Dilbert's Scott Adams on Goals: Short-Term is Better Than Long-Term

Dilbert's Scott Adams on Goals: Short-Term is Better Than Long-Term

Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic strip, isn't a big believer in following your passion or setting long-term goals. They are "blinders" for unnecessary prioritizing and cause you to miss out on opportunities in related areas.

The world is completely unpredictable now. You can't predict where your career will be in a year. You can't predict what technologies will change the world. You can't predict whether robots will be taking your jobs. So picking a goal in this world has its downsides.

Adams adds that short-term goals are fine, like focusing on adding one new skill to your repertoire in the next three months. But as Fast Company puts it, the blinders come on when the goal gets specific and long-term, like "I want my boss's job in the next five years."
