Cleaning kits for your laptop, TV and other electronics are nice, but the Wall Street Journal tested and found that water and a microfiber cloth are just as effective at cleaning your screen.
Over at the Wall Street Journal, they purposefully dirtied up a computer to determine the most effective way to clean it. They found that a microfiber cloth sprayed with a bit of water (and, if you like, isopropyl alcohol) did the best job of cleaning the screen—no fancy products necessary. The exceptionally dirty parts other than the screen were easier to clean with dedicated electronics cleaning products, but you can just clean it regularly with water to prevent the buildup in the first place.
Those solutions work well, but you don't have to pay $20 for one just to clean a smudgy screen. A spray bottle of water, a microfiber cloth, compressed air and an old toothbrush will keep your computer clean and your wallet full. Check out our other tips for cleaning your gadgets for more.
